Elton is arguably the most sought after village in Cambridgeshire. Flowing through the village is the River Nene, reputedly the inspiration for the well known children's novel, "Wind in the Willows", which is also one of England’s most popular boating rivers.

Elton Mill and Lock is a short walk from the front door over the village greens. Just beyond are beautiful walks through meadows with an array of wildlife. Footpaths are clearly marked.

Also in the village of Elton are the shop and Post Office found on Middle Street. There is a hairdressers, garden centre with a cafe, The Black Horse Pub and also the Loch Fyne fish restaurant. There are some beautiful villages nearby and the ancient market town of Oundle is a 10 minute drive West. Oundle, like many other villages and towns in England, was originally a trading place and market for local farmers and craftsmen. As the area became more prosperous, wealthy traders set up shops and houses, and guilds were formed. A document dating from 638 refers to Oundle as the site of an hospitium, a building used by monks to give shelter and assistance to travellers. Oundle is also home to the well known public school.

To the east of Elton, Peterborough is a 15 minute drive and has large departments stores and businesses as well as a beautiful Cathedral, Greyhound racing stadium, outdoor swimming pool and main GNER rail connections to Edinburgh (3 hours) and London (45 minutes).

Children's Attractions

Hidden deep in the heart of the countryside, close to the River Nene, nestles an 18th Century mill and country farm where the treasures of farming and country life lie waiting to be discovered.

The highly regarded Sacrewell Farm and Country Centre (see 'Related Links' for more information), which is an English Tourist Board Quality Assured Visitor Attraction, is an ideal way to spend the day with your children.

Also nearby is the Nene Valley steam Railway.
